Things are starting to heat up in the Visual Basic class I am taking this Spring.  Tonight’s topics: Sub routines and functions.  Wahoo!

A special treat from my professor. He’s recording the whole lecture with Camtasia Relay.  My how things have changed in 12 years…where was this tech when I was in school? Egh…I feel so old!

Break time is over! Got to go.

Seeds for plants

Even, after last year’s tomato disaster, I still feel like growing a small garden.  This year’s menu includes spinach, carrots, tomatoes and some flowers to garnish the landscape.  Might as well fight the…oh wait!  Sorry, nothing to see here…move along, inflation doesn’t exist!

Geez, I hate to admit, I never realized how awesome Freddie King was.  I watched the video of Stevie Ray Vaughn playing Hide Away (below), an awesome Freddie King song and today I searched around to find Goin’ Down.  Freddie King was too cool.

Lately I’ve been hunkering to learn how to play the roots of great guitar playing – the Blues…I have to say, if I could wake up one day and play the guitar like someone, it would be SRV – he was simply amazing.  Just watch the video below to see him play Rude Mood around the 2:30 mark in the video – it’s unbelievable…

Politics and Pasta

As if the title Politics and Pasta isn’t classic enough, Mayor Buddy Cianci (although former Mayor, he’ll always be referred to as Mayor) is releasing his memoir that has the entire name of:

Politics and Pasta: How I Prosecuted Mobsters, Rebuilt a Dying City, Dined with Sinatra, Spent Five Years in a Federally Funded Gated Community, and Lived to Tell the Tale

Buddy’s trip to the Federally Funded Gated Community stems from his conviction on a racketeering conspiracy charge which was the only one of 27 charges that he was found guilty on.  However, Buddy’s ‘criminal enterprise’ did wonders for the city of Providence and he still remains beloved by many in the state.  I have to say, I enjoy listening in on the Buddy Cianci show from time to time on the local news-talk WPRO 630 AM station.

Zoeller 1/2 HP Sump Pump

Zoeller 1/2 HP Sump Pump

It’s almost Spring and the picture above is what I hope will prevent below.  Water is starting to fill one of the two sump pits I now have, but I have high hopes that the 1/2 horse power Zoeller sump pump will save the day.  It’s built like a tank.  More to come…

Last year’s total disaster:

Kayak floats in basement
Kayak basement tours

A trip down Memory Lane…

Fan wet basement

A tower fan makes a futile attempt to keep the floor dry...this seemed bad at first.

Sears sump pump

The original sump pump, not sure how old but I think Sears still sells this style of pump. At this point the pump ran nonstop doing its best to pump as much water as possible.

Sump overflow

Water begins to win the battle, the sump pump is completely overwhelmed. I remember when this happened, I felt rather relieved as I knew there was nothing I could do. No more fighting the inevitable, time to go upstairs and think about how to get out of this mess. Things are about to get worse...

It didn't take too long to get into this situation, but don't think that pump wasn't still going! (If only I had what I have now...)

Utility pump flooded basement
A lonely utility pump tries to help…  one thing I can recall is the water temperature…it must have been in the 40′s and it didn’t take long for your toes to hurt.

Dryer in water
The dryer was placed on some plastic shelving. Obviously it wasn’t high enough, but the dryer works just fine today.

Boiler submerged in water

The heating system was the biggest concern. We attempted to form a barricade with bags of sand and towels. Worked for a while, but eventually water wins. When everything cleared my friend came over and disassembled the burner to remove trapped water. Afterwards we fired up the boiler and it started no problem, but then it appeared as if smoke started to seep out. Turns out it was just steam and everything was okay, the boiler and burner survived, although the burner bit the dust about six months later.
